Funnyman Rob has been tickling our funny bones for a good few years – first as the dimwitted Twakkie, then partnering with Kurt Schoonraad on Crazy Games on SABC 2. He has now joined forces with Anele Mdoda to bring us SA's Got Talent, the hottest new reality show in Mzansi.
Q: Sometimes people who are actually pretty funny crash and burn when they’re forced to present on TV. Are you scared for your role as co-host of SA's Got Talent?
A: No ways I am having a jol. It's a great team of people, a great show and I can't wait for it to go live and find out who's going to take it.
Q: Do you feel sorry for people whose attempts to find fame lead to public humiliation for the amusement of a national TV audience?
A: Ja shame man, some okes are kak. But hey if you sign up for a reality TV show competition like this then you should be aware that you could end up looking like a nana. No one's forcing you to enter.
Q: Sadie thinks she’s got talent, but her mom wants her to go into the family shipping business. What's your advice?
A: Go for your dream - if it doesn't work out you can always get back into the shipping business with mom and pops later. But imagine if you've never given it a go and fifty years from now you're sitting in your office on the ship and you're like "Damn I was really really really really REALLY good at Tiddly Winks once. I could've been great, but now I'll never know."
Q: How can SA's Got Talent entrants differentiate themselves from the US/UK/Russian/Kazhakstani shows?
A: From their accents mostly. And the fact that we have the most talent in the world ever.
Q: If Idols was about finding the X-Factor, is SA’s Got Talent about finding the SuBo factor?
A: The amazing thing about SA's Got Talent is that you get to know people who don't necessarily fit into pre-subscribed ideas about how people should look or be. And don't forget that it's also about people with all different kinds of talents, from singing to dancing to juggling to snake dancing - you name it.
Q: Which SA city has the most talent and why?
A: It's hard to say - there really is a wealth of talent all over the place - we auditioned in PE, Durban, Joburg and Cape Town - and people came in from all over the country to whichever centre was closest to them.
Q: How far would Corne have made it in the competition, should he have entered, and what would his talent be?
A: His talent would have been to seduce Ian Von Memerty and he would have expelled from the competition in the first round for having an unfair advantage.
Q: Previous reality TV show hosts in SA have bombed out (we won't mention any names). How do you and Anele plan to keep the show interesting?
A: We are basically responding off the contestants and the variety, quality, and entertainment value has been overwhelming so I can safely say that there is no chance that the show wont be interesting. It's going to rock.
Q: What’s your biggest, best secret talent?
A: All my talents are quite public and I even subject people to my quite mediocre talents, so I have very few secret talents.
Q: What's the best gig you've ever done?
A: The best gig that I will ever do will be when my one man show 'Rob van Vuuren is Rob van Vuuren' which runs at the Newspace Theatre in Long Street, Cape Town in October. See yous there.
